Washington Wine Grape Harvest 2005

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Washington State Reaps Record-Breaking Wine Grape Harvest Seasonal Weather, Mature Vines Deliver Outstanding 2005 Vintage

SEATTLE - December 1, 2005 - Washington state's 2005 grape harvest boasts not only record-breaking numbers, but bold flavors as Washington state grape growers and wine producers wrap up one of the most outstanding crushes in the industry's history. With crush estimated at 116,760 tons according to the Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers (WAWGG), the 2005 harvest surpasses the industry's previous record of 115,000 tons crushed in 2002.
Thanks to a perfect combination of warm summer months, cool autumn temperatures and a mild winter, the 2005 harvest yields quality grapes that are both large in quantity and rich in flavor. The moderate winter temperatures and a prolonged Indian summer allowed grapes the extra hang time needed to develop robust Washington wine characteristics. Concentrated flavors due to smaller berry sizes and cluster weights set 2005 apart as a stand-out quality vintage.

"While its still too early to tell, 2005 could very well be the vintage of the decade for Washington state," said Jeff Gordon, chairman of the Washington Wine Commission and owner of Gordon Brothers Family Vineyards in Pasco, Wash. "Mother Nature was definitely on our side this year, delivering one of the warmest summers we’ve had in recent years, cool and constant fall weather and a frost-free harvest. This allowed the fruit to hang on the vine longer and enhance flavor development."

While red and white wine production maintain a near 50/50 ratio in 2005, Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah look particularly promising with great color, balance and ripe flavors.

"The crop has been beautiful this year,” said Vicky Scharlau, Executive Director of the Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers. “Many vines are coming out of adolescence, bringing a maturity to the vintage not seen in recent years. Great things are in store for Washington wine in 2005."

Key red varietals widely planted in Washington state include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc. Leading white wine varieties include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Viognier.

Washington ranks second only to California in domestic wine production, with more than 30,000 acres under cultivation and more than 360 wineries. The industry contributed $3 billion to the state economy last year, with wine retail sales reaching $685 million.
