From the Better Business Bureau.
Recent "questionable" calls in Kennewick promted a release of these tips to prevent solicitation fraud.
1. Do not give cash; always make contributions by check and make your check payable to the charity, not to the individual collecting the donation.
2. Never give personal information over the phone unless you know exactly which charity you are speaking with. Don't give into high pressure tactics like, "We need this money now" and emotional pleas.
3. Ask them who they are, where they are located, and their phone number. Ask if you can call them back to verify. Keep records of your donations.
4. Don't be fooled by names that look impressive or that closely resemble the name of a well-known organization.
5. Check out the organization with the Secretary of State's Charitable Division and with your Better Business Bureau.
